Gimbal mount downriggers

Has anyone used a downrigger attached to a gimbal mount rod holder base? I've seen them online and would rather not drill into the boat if I can avoid it. I'm wondering if they are pretty stable, etc. I would use it on a 195CC. I fish a lot for Stripers in New England and like to use lighter tackle. The wire/lead line takes a lot of the fun out of it but when it's warm out you need to troll in 20 feet or more of water to get to the fish.

BostonFisher: I have used rod tube mounted swivel base downriggers (Penn) on my 210 CC for 3 years and am quite happy. I should note that I have gone through one perko rod tube in the process - the bottom of the tube has a plastic fin which fits into notches on the dowrigger tube to keep it from spinning. I broke this when I dragged a ball. They swivel based doesn't site right on top of the gunwale - about 1.5 inches off - but it doesn't bother me enough to cut off the aluminum tubes and redo.

We use a gimbal mount for our scotty downrigger and it works great. Have only used it for a year but have had no problems at all.

I have two on my 191 and love them. It was the best way so I did not have to drill into the boat and they are stable.

I've used them for about a year. No problems with the cannons. Cabelas had the best price I could find on the gimbals and they are pre drilled to fit most popular brand downriggers.

I just ordred the gimabal mount Cannon from Cabellas. Can't wait to troll up some stripers on mono and to let the dust settle on my wire line rod. Thanks to everyone for their help.
