Small Bluefin Tuna (SBFT) in the boat
Landed my first tuna ever on Friday. It was a magic day. I landed five total. They were the "football" size as we call them up here. 30" to 35" and around 20-25lbs. I was fishing off the Rhode Island coast. There is an unbelievable amount of BFT in RI and MA this year. I was fishing with my striper rod combined with a Penn 6500 with 30lb line. Lures were all metal: Maria, Kastmaster, crippled herring. After I broke one on 20lb fluoro leader, I switched to 40lb mono. Did the trick. That being said people who know what they are doing are catching them on much lighter tackle than that. I like heavier tackle so that I can keep the fight short (10 to 15 minutes for me) and release them before they get exhausted. I kept one. Yummy sashimi!!!
There were plenty of blues mixed with the tuna so I lost a few lures. Anyway it was an awesome day. I could not get one to eat the fly but that is my next challenge.
