Carolinians Lend A Hand Please

OK so I consider myself somewhat of a Carolinian having lived there for 10 years before being forced (wife) to move to New Jersey....We're heading down to Manteo for a week starting this Saturday and I will want to do some fishing as well as pulling the kids around on the tube. We're staying at Pirates Cove and when I look at the NOAA charts online, they show Roanoke Sound as being mostly 1-3' in depth? Is that really the case? Any advice on where to head for some tubing with the kids? And of course, I won't pass on any good fishing hot spots either....THANKS IN ADVANCE...

nymart,

Check out my North Carolina Angler website. You can register an account for free and post a message in the coastal fishing forums. We are approaching 5,000 registered members and there are a great bunch of anglers there that hopefully can share some good information. :)

Carolina--Manteo Area

The Shallow Bag Bay area right in front of Pirate's Cove is deep enough and big enough for tubing, wake board, etc. This would be between Roanoke Island and Pond Island. I ran all over this area with a stern drive 24 ft. cabin boat with no problems. The only problem is the wind causing too much chop to play in comfort. And I would run around the area at no wake speed watching the depth finder to confirm your comfort level. Mostly 4-6 ft. or more

South of the bridge to Nags Head is very shallow outside the marked channel. If you run down toward Oregon Inlet, stay in the channel or proceed at slow speed. It is neat to explore Wanchese Harbor and the short cut through John's Ditch (ask a local). Plenty deep enough at mid to high tide.

And if you choose to explore around the north side of Roanoke Island, stay in the channel. Close to shore, the houses are neat to look at but the water is shallow. You can actualls see Andy Griffin's house(if you wish) from the water. Not from land, long secluded drive way.

Get a chart and have some fun...
