In this day and age how can the process of buying a boat with a lein from a private party (in this case a good friend) take so long ? It should be electronicly transfered funds to the bank at which time after verification of funds an access code is sent to print out the title. Im ready to go for a ride now! Its 87 , sunny and glassy here this morning . Sitting in my driveway , drinking coffee in my brandnewsecondhand Triumph 190 Bay. (115 Yamaha) Sad huh ........what if i just put it in anyway, its insured.....

Congratulations on the 190 Bay and welcome aboard. How long have you been waiting on the title? Bummer for sure! :)

Been there done that... If insured just carry a copy of the "Bill of Sale" that includes both the HIN and Hull numbers along with your insurance paperwork, and I would think you would be fine ;)

As a backup measure, you can always call the local Marine law enforcement body and ask them if this would work?

Screw it. Take it out.

I like that plan. Good call. I dont think i will be able to sleep tonight.

So my "friends" that I bought the boat from have not even sent the $ to the lein holder beacuse they are waiting for the check to clear. Understandable, but why not cash the check at my bank first? Or why didnt I just give them cash? Rookie move.....

Rookie move was paying in full to seller without a release of lien & tranfer of title from the lienholder. If the lienholder is a bank, then I would have only provided a draft to the bank until a clear title is provided. The seller can just keep the money and not give it to the lienholder period and your out in the cold. You are taking a large risk. Always demand a clear title or only deal with the lienholder when paying.

I agree with Bill! plus "friends" are sometimes the first to stick it to you, but then again they really wouldn't be friends would they.

ok, $ was delivered to leinholder yesterday. So just two hundred more days and I will have the title. 88f sunny and light offshore winds today. I cant let this boat sit in the driveway any longer.
